The software programs below are all very very good and are great alternatives to paid software, I have used most of these myself and continue to do so.

1. Open Office: A multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, free to download, this is very similar to using Microsoft Office but it is free!!! you can also create PDF files which is great.

2. GIMP: GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages. This program is very similar to Photoshop but it is Free!!!

3. Trellian Webpage: Trellian WebPage is a freeware application that can be used to build websites, it is similar to Microsoft FrontPage and best of all its free!!! This is an easy to use HTML editor for building websites.

4. Joomla: Joomla! is one of the most powerful Open Source Content Management Systems on the planet. It is used all over the world for everything from simple websites to complex corporate applications. Joomla! is easy to install, simple to manage, and reliable and best of all its free!!!

5. Audacity: Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. Very useful for recording sound via a microphone for pod casts, etc.

6. MP3 Tag Tools: Use MP3 Tag tool for editing MP3 files. You can add pictures to your MP3 recordings and proper headings and titles to each recording. Very useful for preparing MP3 recordings for pod casting and its free!!!

7. Core FTP: This free, secure FTP client gives you a fast, easy, reliable way to update and maintain your website via FTP. It also provides a secure method (via SSL, TLS, or SFTP) to upload / download files to and from FTP servers. Great for uploading files to your website and its free!!!

11. SKYPE: Skype is a little piece of software that lets you make free calls to anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world. And even though the calls are free, they are really excellent quality. If you and your friends, family or business contacts are using webcams, you can also make free video calls. You can even call landlines and mobile phones at really cheap rates. This is really a great bit of software, the best way to use this software is to buy a skype phone (less than £20) which can be bought on eBay. I have been using this myself lately and it really is impressive and best of all its free!!!
